What is Factory License?


Factory License acts as a document of approval given by authorities to carry out manufacturing activities. The Department of Factories and Boilers issues Factory License. It is the duty of the Factories and Boilers Department to keep a check on the health, safety, and welfare of workers.

Factories Act 1948, says that a factory must obtain its building plan approval from the labor and employment department before covering itself for a factory registration. Under this act, registration and renewal of the Factory license are also done to ensure the safety of workers.

Why this License is Required?

To protect the workers and to ensure that the owner is providing a healthy environment, the government introduced the Factory Act, of 1948. As per the Factory Act 1948, every factory owner must register their premises with the local authorities before commencing their business. 

Document Required for Factory License

Necessary Documents for Approval of Plans of the Factory
  • List of Raw Materials (including solvents/fuels/chemicals used if any) with maximum storage capacity and mode of storage, and handling.
  • List of Finished products, Intermediate products including emission of toxic gases and by-products along with maximum quantities, method of handling, loading & transport.
  • Process flow chart
  • Description of Manufacturing Process
  • Details of likely hazards involved and methods to control them
  • Material Safety Data Sheets in respect of hazardous chemicals
  • Process & Instrumentation Diagram.
  • Details of Chemical reactions carried out if any
  • Details of firefighting arrangements proposed to make
  • Duly signed copy of Form no. 1.
  • Allotment letter from MIDC/ NOC from Local authority.
